One of the longest-running modern lottos is the Canadian Lotto 6/49 which celebrated its 30th birthday a few years ago and is still very much going strong. With a defined structure it was the first lotto of its kind in Canada and truly revolutionised the way the lotto was played in Canada.

As the name may suggest the game is a “6/49” games. What this means that all players who want to play Lotto 6/49 must pick 6 numbers from a selection of 49 numbers. To win the jackpot, a player must match all 6 of their numbers with the numbers that where drawn out from the balls during the official Lotto 6/49 draw.

During the draw a bonus number is also pulled out which can be used to help players who have not managed to match all their numbers. For example if a player matches 5 of their 6 numbers with those drawn but their 6th number matches the bonus number then they will have just won the “second” prize – or the second tier prize.

The Jackpot for the Lotto 6/49 starts out at $5,000,000 as a minimum jackpot prize. The lotto 6/49 also implements a roll over system that allows for the jackpot to continue growing until it finally gets won. This is the main attraction of this style of lotto that was pioneered in Canada.

When the Lotto 6/49 was first introduced into Canada in 1982, it was the first lottery of its kind. All of the lotteries before that just gave you a random selection of numbers when the tickets where printed. You did not have the opportunity to choose your own numbers. Lotto 6/49 changed all of that and allows for a totally free choice of numbers so it is not difficult to see why all of the other lottos in Canada quickly fell to the wayside after the Lotto 6/49 was launched.

The largest jackpot ever given away by the Lotto 6/49 came along in 2013. On April 13th, four tickets matched the drawn numbers and where all awarded their share of a $63.4 million prize. So the jackpots are a very nice size but do not manage the dizzying heights of many of the other worldwide lottos.

With that said though, it is still a staple lotto in the arsenal of many worldwide lotto lovers and it is certainly something that you should consider if you are wanted to delve into the exciting world of Lotto.
